JÙUN: Where Hong Kong’s Cantonese Soul Meets Mumbai’s Timeless Charm

By Akash Kapadi

Perched on the second floor of Mumbai’s iconic Eros Theatre in Churchgate, JÙUN is one of the city’s most exciting new dining destinations. The moment the elevator doors open, the bustling streets of Churchgate fade away, replaced by an elegant Cantonese house that feels as though it has been lifted from the vibrant backstreets of Hong Kong.

The name JÙUN, meaning “Talented,” perfectly captures the philosophy of the restaurant. Every dish, every cocktail and every detail reflects craftsmanship, precision and respect for Cantonese culinary traditions while embracing Mumbai’s cosmopolitan spirit.

Unlike many Asian restaurants that blend cuisines, JÙUN stays true to Cantonese cooking—where freshness, restraint and technique take centre stage. The kitchen believes that great food comes down to three fundamentals: fresh ingredients, impeccable technique and perfect timing. The result is a menu that is clean, balanced and designed for sharing, allowing every ingredient to express itself without unnecessary complexity.

Interiors That Tell a Story

The restaurant blends old-world sophistication with contemporary elegance. Warm lighting, polished wood, mirrors, Asian-inspired décor and views over Churchgate create an atmosphere that’s intimate yet lively. It feels like stepping into one of Hong Kong’s hidden dining rooms, tucked away above the city’s busy streets.

Even the beer taps deserve attention, pouring craft selections like Rice Lager, Sunset Wheat, Bad Habit and New England IPA, adding another thoughtful layer to the beverage program.

Cocktails Inspired by Two Great Cities

One of the most fascinating aspects of JÙUN is its cocktail menu.

Instead of simply listing drinks, the menu tells a story.

The concept is inspired by the vertical cities of Hong Kong and Bombay—cities that reveal themselves floor by floor rather than street by street. As the introduction beautifully explains:

“Cities like Hong Kong and Bombay don’t move in straight lines. You arrive at street level. You don’t stay there. You rise into smaller rooms, quieter corners, better views—sometimes into places harder to explain but impossible to forget.”

The cocktail menu is divided like a building.

Street Level

Bright, approachable and energetic cocktails including:

  • Pear & Elderflower
  • Sichuan Plum Picante
  • Coffee & Pandan
  • Zero Green Apple Picante

Penthouse

More refined creations such as:

  • JÙUN Sour
  • Strawberry Coconut Negroni
  • Passion Noir
  • Beetrotini

Off The Grid

For adventurous drinkers looking for bolder flavours:

  • JÙUN Paloma
  • Cacao Old Fashioned
  • Berry Fizz
  • Sesame Martini
  • Yuzu Highball

Every cocktail starts with an ingredient, a memory or a feeling. Hong Kong appears in fragments, Bombay responds with its own stories, and together they create a menu that is thoughtful rather than theatrical.

As the menu fittingly concludes:

“The best nights rarely follow a plan.”

The Menu

JÙUN offers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian tasting menus while also serving an extensive à la carte selection inspired by classic Cantonese cooking.

Soups

The meal begins with comforting broths like:

  • Stewed Asparagus with Crab Consommé
  • Asian Green Soup with Silken Tofu & Enoki
  • Chicken & Shiitake Sui Mai Soup

Salads

Fresh and beautifully balanced options include:

  • Smoked Cucumber & Wood Ear Mushroom
  • Lacquered Duck with Toasted Almond Salad

Signature Dim Sum

The dim sum program is undoubtedly one of the highlights of JÙUN.

  • Har Gow
  • Char Siu Bao
  • Truffle Prawn Dumplings

Each dumpling is delicate, beautifully folded and cooked with precision.

Small Plates

The small plates showcase Cantonese flavours with contemporary presentation.

  • Lo Bak Go (turnip cake)
  • Morning Glory with Oyster Sauce
  • Tiger Prawns in Roasted Pumpkin Sauce
  • Crispy Chicken with Brown Sauce
  • Wok Tossed Chicken with Dried Chilli & Sichuan Pepper

Wok & Claypot

The mains are hearty yet refined.

Signature dishes include:

  • Kung Pao Chicken
  • Steamed Grouper in Fermented Black Bean Sauce
  • NZ Lamb Chops in Black Pepper Oyster Sauce
  • Udon Noodles with Black Pepper Sauce
  • Chicken & Water Chestnut Claypot Rice
  • Lap Cheong Sausage Claypot Rice
  • Tenderloin & Bone Marrow Claypot Rice

The Claypot Tenderloin with Bone Marrow deserves special mention. Rich, deeply flavoured and wonderfully comforting, it’s one of the restaurant’s finest dishes.

My Recommendations

Among everything I tasted, these dishes stood out:

Cheung Fun

Available in both vegetarian and King Prawn versions, the silky rice rolls are beautifully delicate with exceptional texture.

Lychee Prawns

A surprising combination of sweetness and savoury flavours that perfectly showcases Cantonese balance.

Har Gow

Simple, elegant and expertly executed. The translucent wrappers are thin while the prawn filling remains juicy and sweet.

Claypot Tenderloin with Bone Marrow

Comfort food elevated through premium ingredients and patient cooking.

Egg Trio Dessert

An imaginative dessert featuring three different egg-based preparations that celebrate traditional Cantonese flavours with modern presentation.

Chocolate Dim Sum

The perfect finale—playful, rich and guaranteed to leave a smile.

Desserts

The dessert selection is equally impressive with favourites including:

  • Brown Butter Caramel Pecan Pudding
  • Hong Kong Egg Tart Trio
  • Spiced Chai Pear on Ginger Cheesecake
  • Egg Trio
  • Chocolate Dim Sum

Final Verdict

JÙUN isn’t trying to reinvent Cantonese cuisine. Instead, it honours its traditions while presenting them through the lens of modern Mumbai hospitality.

Everything feels intentional—from the thoughtfully written cocktail menu and carefully sourced ingredients to the precision of every dim sum fold and every perfectly balanced sauce.

For lovers of authentic Cantonese food, refined cocktails and elegant dining, JÙUN is one of Mumbai’s standout restaurant openings. It proves that true luxury isn’t about extravagance; it’s about restraint, craftsmanship and letting quality speak for itself.

Located above one of Mumbai’s most iconic theatres, JÙUN feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. And much like the cities that inspired it, the best experiences here are often found when you leave the street behind and simply take the lift upstairs.
Rating: 4.8/5

JÙUN is more than a meal—it’s a journey through the flavours of Hong Kong, reimagined for Mumbai.
